Students in F-1 status are required to report any change in
degree program or level, even if enrolling at the same
institution. As such, it is important to abide by the
following guidelines in order to maintain legal status.
BCIS(formerly INS) requires that the Office of
International Programs prepare a new I-20 in the Student
and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). A
financial statement not older than six months is needed in
order to do the new I-20. Normally, the I-20 must be done
within 21 days of the start of the new program, but there
may be an earlier deadline depending upon your current
status. Please come to the Office of International Programs
as soon as you start thinking about changing your program
so that the paperwork can be discussed. Also, please inform
the office if you plan to leave and reenter the U.S. prior
to the start of the new program.
FAILURE TO COMPLETE THIS PROCESS WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE
YOUR LEGAL F-1 STATUS.
Please direct any questions or concerns to the Office of
International Programs.
