F-1 students unable to complete studies by the date listed
on their I-20, must file for an extension of stay. This
extension is necessary to maintain lawful status in the US.
A student must file the appropriate documentation at least
30 days prior to the expiration date listed on the I-20.
An F-1 student is eligible for program extension if: he or
she has continually maintained status; the delay in
completion is caused by compelling academic or medical
reasons such as change of major or research topic; or due
to unexpected research problems or documented illness.
TO APPLY FOR EXTENSION, PLEASE BRING THE FOLLOWING
DOCUMENTS TO THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS:
- Letter from department chair or advisor documenting
reason for delay and listing the new expected graduation
date.
- Student copy of current I-20.
- A new financial statement covering the period of
extension.
Note: An extension of stay is NOT possible if the I-20
completion date has passed or if the delay in completion is
due to academic probation or suspension. In the above
listed circumstances reinstatement would be the appropriate
avenue to pursue.
